Zou Lan, head of financial markets at the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), announced the latest update on the virtual version of yuan during a press conference this week.
As stated by the financial authorities, the digital yuan had more than 261 mln customers by the end of the previous year. In 2022 this number has a great chance to be doubled.
In addition, transactions worth $13.78 bln have been made with this digital asset.
It is also important to say that approximately eight mln merchants started accepting this currency as a means of payment.
